Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Bournville, Birmingham

Residents campaigned against plans by Tesco to sell alcohol at a store on the edge of Bournville, an alcohol-free village in Birmingham. The area was built by the Quaker George Cadbury in the 1890s and has been alcohol-free since then.

Alcohol license refused

Birmingham City Council's licensing committee refused the application to sell alcohol at the store. A particular concern was the impact this could have on anti-social behaviour in the area.
