Tesco has been trying to develop the Anstey's Road land since it bought the Kleeneze site in 2003. Tesco submitted a planning application which led to a campaign against the scheme. Tesco later withdrew the application before it was determined by South Gloucestershire Council, whose planning officers had recommended rejection.
Tesco started the consultation process for a store in November 2007 but received numerous complaints that the original plans for a 45,000 sq ft store would threaten existing shops and cause major traffic problems.
A campaign group "Say No To Tesco Group" was set up and has distributed 3,000 leaflets to residents in the area. More than 500 letters of objection were received by the Council. A petition against the development with 685 signatures was also presented to the Council. About 100 Hanham residents attended an extraordinary meeting of Hanham Parish Council in April 2009. Residents are concerned about the store being built in a residential area and the impact on local shops and traffic.
