Tesco's plans to open an Express store in September 2011 at the site of the former Black Bull pub, Somersham were fought by local residents.
Residents feared it could hit local traders and increase traffic and launched a campaign against the proposal and Facebook page which attracted 160 members in just 24 hours. However, planning permission was not needed for change of land use, but an application for minor works for a new shop entrance, signs and ATM were submitted.
For more information see an article in the Hunts Post, 18th February 2011 and "Somersham Villagers Say No To Tesco", 22nd February 2011.
In March protestors converged on a Somersham Parish Council meeting in an attempt to halt the plans. Please see an article in the Hunts Post, 17th March 2011.
However, the store opened in September 2011.
