In March 2010 a Government planning inspector rejected a scheme to transform Kendal Rugby Club's Shap Road ground into a supermarket and non-food retail units. Planning Inspector George Baird said in his report that the development would create an additional 180 vehicles an hour in both directions at the Station Road junction at Longpool. Local residents had opposed the application.
In August 2011 developer Terrace Hill said it had pre-let a site in Skelton to Asda on a 25-year lease.

Ulverston faces two plans for supermarkets in the town.
i) Robinsons plans for a supermarket in Brewery Street. In April 2012 the plans were withdrawn and re-submitted after heritage organisations including English Heritage, the Victorian Society and Save Britain’s Heritage all objected to the plan, which would involve the demolition of former brewery buildings.
